Overview

Tulp: Inburgering & KNM Prep (“Tulp”, “we”, “our”) is an Android app from TIT, based in the Netherlands, for learning Dutch vocabulary and practising for the KNM exam. Tulp collects no personal data.

There is no account and no sign-in. The app contains no analytics, no tracking and no advertising. The only thing it sends is the anonymous diagnostic reports described below, which help us fix crashes and bugs and which you can turn off.

What Stays on Your Phone

  • Your study progress: the words and phrases you have studied and when they are due again, the words you saved to My words, your grammar lessons, your KNM answers, wrong-answer book, favourites and mock-exam results, your streak and statistics.
  • Your settings: the app’s language, your level, daily goals, reminder time and audio settings.

All of this is stored only on your phone. Tulp doesn’t sync it to any server; only a diagnostic report (below) can mention a few recent steps, such as the lesson you had open. If backup is turned on in Android’s settings, your progress and settings are part of your phone’s backup to your Google Account, like other apps’ data, and come back when you set up a new phone; the app’s log is left out.

Diagnostic Reports

So that we can find and fix crashes and bugs, Tulp sends reports to our server on Cloudflare unless you turn off Me → Diagnostics → Share diagnostics. They are:

  • Crash and freeze reports that Android keeps for the app: where the app stopped, the code that was running and how much memory it used, with the last lines of the app’s log.
  • The app’s log after an error, such as progress that couldn’t be saved or a recording that wouldn’t play: what the app did shortly before it — the screens you opened, the words, questions and exercises you saw and whether your answers were right — and the error itself. At most five a day.
  • The app version, the Android version and the phone model.

A report contains no name, account, email address or location, nothing you typed, and no identifier that links it to you or to your other reports. Reports are stored without your IP address with Cloudflare, which runs our server (Cloudflare’s privacy policy), and deleted after 90 days. Turning sharing off also deletes the reports still waiting to be sent.

Send feedback in Me attaches a fuller report to an email in your email app, and Me → Diagnostics lets you view or share it: the same details plus your phone’s language and time zone, Tulp’s settings, how many words and questions you have studied and the app’s recent log. It goes nowhere unless you send it yourself; you see it first and can remove it from the email, and we use it only to answer you and fix the problem.

Reminders

If you turn on the daily reminder, Tulp asks Android for permission to show notifications and schedules them on your phone. No push service or server is involved.

Pronunciation

Dutch words and sentences are played from recordings that come with the app, on your phone. Should a recording ever be missing, your phone’s text-to-speech engine speaks the text instead.

Links to Other Websites

Each KNM question links to an official source, such as a government website, and you can look up a word on Wiktionary. These links open in your browser; the website you open sees your visit, as with any website, under its own privacy policy. Tulp sends it nothing else.

Google

Google provides Google Play, downloads and updates under Google’s privacy policy. After a finished session Tulp may ask Google Play to show its rating dialog; Google decides whether it appears and handles your rating, and we don’t learn who rated. If you have chosen to share usage and diagnostics with Google, Google Play may give us crash statistics for the app; they don’t identify you.

Deleting Your Data

Uninstall the app and all of Tulp’s data on that phone is deleted with it; a backup in your Google Account is managed in your Google Account’s settings. To start over without uninstalling, use Me → Reset all progress, which erases your word reviews, KNM answers and exam history. Neither can be undone.

Children’s Privacy

Tulp collects no personal data from anyone, children included.

Your Rights

Diagnostic reports can’t be linked to you, so we hold no data about you through the app, and you can stop them at any time with Me → Diagnostics → Share diagnostics. If you email us, we use your email address and message (and any report you attach) only to answer you, and you can ask us to delete them. You can also lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy. Changes are reflected in the “Last updated” date above, and if Tulp starts sending anything more, this policy will say so before that version is released.
