Tulp Inburgering exam prep: words, grammar and KNM
Built for the inburgering exam. Not a language course that takes years: Tulp teaches the 3,800 words from A1 to B1 and the grammar the exams use, and lets you practise KNM with 640+ questions until you know it — explained in English, Chinese or Japanese.
Free: no in-app purchases, no ads, no subscription. For iPhone with iOS 18 or later.

One app for three exams
Reading (Lezen): the A1–B1 words and grammar that exam texts use. Writing (Schrijven): grammar and about 380 fixed phrases for letters and emails. KNM: 640+ questions on the 2025 eindtermen and a timed mock exam. Every word and example sentence can be heard in Dutch, so your listening improves along the way.
3,800 words from A1 to B1
Complete beginners start with about 600 A1 basics in small themed steps: greetings, numbers, family, time. Every word comes with its meaning, an example sentence and translations, spoken by Dutch voices on your device. Nouns show de or het in colour. Set a daily goal, or turn on listening mode to recognise words by ear first.
Reviews just before you forget
Tulp schedules every review with FSRS, a modern spaced-repetition algorithm. Rate a card Forgot, Unsure or Know it — each button shows when the word comes back, from 1 minute to days later.
Phrases the Dutch actually use
About 380 fixed prepositions (wachten op, trots op), collocations (een afspraak maken), everyday expressions and phrases for letters and emails, studied with the same cards and drilled with Fill the gap: Ik wacht ___ de bus → op.
Grammar from A1 to B1
28 lessons, each with the rule in one line, colour-coded sentence diagrams, a comparison with your language and English, and the mistakes learners often make. Dutch examples you can listen to, and 334 exercises — including word-order puzzles where every correct Dutch order counts. A de/het drill teaches the rules of thumb.
640+ KNM practice questions
Original questions over the eight official KNM themes, each tied to one of the eindtermen in force since 1 July 2025. Every question has an explanation in your language and in simple Dutch, and a link to an official source. Map questions show provinces and cities as the exam does, and every question can be read aloud in Dutch. Show or hide translations as you go.
Read the question, learn the words
Tap any Dutch word in a question to look it up and save it; words you haven't learned yet are underlined. Each answered question lists its key words, and every KNM theme has its own word list. KNM words first teaches those words before others of the same level.
Mistakes, favourites and a mock exam
A wrong-answer book brings back the questions you missed, favourites keep the ones you want to see again, and a timed mock exam gives you 40 questions in 45 minutes.

Frequently asked questions
How is Tulp different from a general language app?
General language apps teach Dutch step by step for everyday life, which takes a long time. Tulp is built for the inburgering exam: it teaches the A1–B1 words and grammar the exams use, puts the words from KNM questions first, and lets you practise KNM on the 2025 eindtermen. Use it on its own or alongside a course.
Which parts of the inburgering exam does Tulp help with?
Reading (Lezen) and writing (Schrijven), through vocabulary, grammar and fixed phrases for letters and emails; and KNM, through practice questions and a mock exam. Listening (Luisteren) and speaking (Spreken) benefit too, because every word and example sentence is spoken in Dutch. Dedicated listening and speaking practice is planned.
Is Tulp free?
Yes. Tulp is a free download with no in-app purchases, no ads and no subscription. Every word, phrase, grammar lesson and KNM question is included.
Are these the official KNM exam questions?
No. They are original practice questions written by TIT from official government information — not DUO's exam questions — and Tulp is not affiliated with DUO or the Dutch government. Each question links to an official source; check inburgeren.nl for the latest rules.
Does Tulp follow the 2025 KNM eindtermen?
Yes. Since 1 July 2025 the KNM exam follows new eindtermen — the official list of what it tests — with new items such as the Holocaust, women's right to self-determination and DigiD. Each of Tulp's questions is tied to one of those eindtermen, across all eight themes.
Which levels does Tulp cover?
A1 to B1: about 3,800 words (about 600 A1 basics, 850 at A2 and 2,350 at B1), 28 grammar lessons from A1 to B1 and about 380 phrases. No Dutch yet? Start from zero with the A1 basics in small themed steps. Know some Dutch? Start from A2, or go straight to B1. The KNM questions are written in A2 Dutch, as in the exam.
Which languages is Tulp in?
English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese. Pick one when you start and the whole app follows it — menus, meanings, translations, explanations and reminders; change it later under Me → Language. The Dutch itself, with its pronunciation, is the same in all three.
Does Tulp work offline, and what happens to my data?
It works offline: the words, questions and Dutch voices are all on your device. There's no account, no analytics and no tracking, and Tulp sends no data to TIT or anyone else. Your progress is stored only on the device and isn't synced; deleting the app deletes it. Only links to official websites and Wiktionary need a connection.
What is FSRS, and how is it different from flashcards?
FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) is a modern algorithm that estimates when you're about to forget each word and schedules its review just before that. With a plain stack of flashcards you go through every card; with Tulp you rate each card Forgot, Unsure or Know it, see when it will come back, and spend your time on the words you're about to lose.
