What charging your Tesla really costs
Updated · TIT
The car tells you how many kilowatt-hours went in. Amp tells you what they cost: every charging session is logged automatically and priced at your fixed rate or your contract's hourly prices, so you know what you spend per month and per 100 km.
Every charging session, logged
Plug in and Amp starts a session on its own. It records when charging started and ended, the battery level before and after, the energy added, the peak and average power, and the full power curve — at home, at work or at a fast charger.
While the car charges, a Live Activity on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island shows the battery level, power and time to full.
A fixed price, or hourly prices
Set what you pay per kWh at home and elsewhere; Amp recognises charging at home by its location and prices each session at the right rate, so a cheap night at home and a fast charge on a road trip each show their own cost.
On a dynamic energy contract, pick your price area and add your supplier's markup and VAT — or, on Agile Octopus in Great Britain, just your region. Each charge at home is then priced at the day-ahead market price, or Agile's half-hourly rate, for the time it charged, and the Charging tab shows today's and tomorrow's prices.
Smart charging in the cheapest hours
Tell Amp when you need the car and how full. When you plug in at home, it plans charging in the cheapest hours before then and starts and stops charging for you. A notification tells you the plan; skip it or charge now whenever you like. Each smart-charged session then shows what it saved compared with charging straight away, and Stats adds the savings up for the period you pick.
Fast charging as billed
For fast charging billed to your car account, Amp fetches the session from your charging history: the amount you were actually billed, including any idle fee, the site's name, and the invoice as a PDF.
Monthly totals and cost per distance
The Stats tab adds it up for the period you pick: energy charged, total charging cost, cost per kWh on average and cost per 100 km driven, next to the distance and energy your drives used.
Insights compare what you spend with what a petrol car would cost, and Cost of Ownership adds insurance, tax, maintenance and your other expenses for a total per kilometre.
Home-charging reimbursement
If your employer pays for charging at home, the reimbursement report lists a month's home sessions with the energy the car measured, optional charging losses, and the recorded cost or a fixed rate per kWh — as CSV and PDF, with a note that it isn't an official meter reading.
Control charging from your iPhone
Start and stop charging, set the charge limit and the charging current, and open or close the charge port. Alerts tell you when charging completes or stops before reaching the limit, with a button to resume it.
Which cars it works with
Amp is made by TIT and works with Tesla Model 3, Model Y and Tesla Cybertruck, and with Model S and Model X built in 2021 or later. It is an independent app, not affiliated with, endorsed or supported by Tesla, Inc.
Frequently asked questions
How does Amp know what a charge cost?
With a fixed price, Amp multiplies the energy each session added by your rate for home or elsewhere. On a dynamic contract, it spreads a home charge over the time it took and prices each part at that moment's market price plus your markup and VAT, or at that half hour's Agile Octopus rate. Fast charging billed to your car account shows the billed amount.
Does it log fast charging too?
Yes. Every session is logged, wherever the car charges; fast-charging sessions are marked as such, show their power curve and, when billed to your car account, the billed cost and invoice.
Can I see the cost per 100 km?
Yes. Stats shows your charging cost per 100 km driven for the period you pick, next to your efficiency.
