Find the museums near you, anywhere in the world
A map that starts where you are
The map shows the museums in view as pins, the ones you have already visited first, then the closest. A Nearby Museums list under the map names the five nearest with their distance, and when you are within a few hundred metres of a museum a banner offers to check you in.
Your location is used on your iPhone to centre the map and sort by distance. It is never sent anywhere.
Search and filter
Search finds museums by name or city. Filter by type — art, history, science, contemporary, specialist or general — and sort by distance, name or city. Two more filters show only the museums you have visited or only those on your wishlist, and in the Netherlands you can limit the list to museums included with the Museumkaart.
What you find out about a museum
A museum's page has a photo where one exists, a description, the type, the city and the year it was founded, plus links to its website and its Wikipedia article. The directions button hands the address to Apple Maps or Google Maps, whichever you prefer.
What it does not have is opening hours and ticket prices — those change too often to keep right for 74,000 museums, so check the museum's website before you go.
From finding to visiting
Save a museum to your wishlist and it waits in your passport. When you get there, one tap checks you in and the museum's stamp joins your collection, with the date, and photos or a note if you add them. Everything you have visited is drawn on a world map in Statistics.
Where the museums come from
The museum data is built from public sources such as Wikidata and OpenStreetMap and shipped inside the app, so search works without a connection; the map itself and museum photos need one. Cultra lists museums in 155 countries, 99 of them with ten or more. If a museum is missing or its details are wrong, email us the name and we will fix it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Cultra work outside the Netherlands?
Yes. The map covers 74,000+ museums in 99 countries, and the app is in English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish and Italian. Only the Museumkaart badge is specific to the Netherlands.
Does it show opening hours or ticket prices?
No. Each museum's page links to its website and Wikipedia article, where the current hours and prices are.
Does it work without internet?
The museum list and search are on your iPhone, so they work offline. The map tiles and the museums' photos need a connection.
Does Cultra track my location?
It uses your location on the device to show nearby museums and offer a check-in. It is not sent to any server, and there is no account.
